Multiplicities.

Multiplicities is an exhibition which took place at the Copeland Gallery in Peckham, London.

The exhibition contained work by BA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography students from the University of the Arts London, as they responded to elements of ‘the city’ - intimate, divided, and invisible. Their work engages with the multiplicities of the urban environment - amassing individual realities through particular explorations of city sights, sensations, and experiences. From thrill-seeking revellers to desolation in the landscape, from the banality of mass housing to the exposure of domestic detail, and from the erasure of women activists to the grandeur of civic architecture, this exhibition characterises the city through the individuality of each photographer.

The curation was a collaboration between myself and four other curators. We aimed to display the chimeric qualities of the city through a juxtaposition of contrasting viewpoints in the design. Each photographer’s work describes a story that speaks not only about the city but also about themselves, subsequently detailing differences in the ways in which we each experience the landscapes around us. The curatorial process therefore focussed on creating a space that would convey these diverging experiences, whilst simultaneously eliciting the audience’s individual encounters with the multiplicities of the city.
